Anecdotes from Joe

This is another story that Edna's brother Joe told about their dad and the work horses.

"One day some guy came up to the house. We had a wet weather spring (a wet weather spring is a spring that doesn’t necessarily produce water year round), and that thing would sometimes break out in the driveway. People who lived around here knew that, but this guy didn’t know any better, and he got hung up in the driveway.

Dad harnessed up George, and brought him up to where the man was stuck. Dad gave the man the tow chain and told him to hook up the car and George would pull him out. Well that guy put the chain around the bumper, and then said: “I don’t think that horse is gonna pull me out of here.” Dad said “Well I don’t know about that, but the way you got that chain hooked up, he definitely will pull that bumper off.”

That man didn’t want to get down in the mud to hook the chain under the car. He finally did get down in there and hooked the chain up, and old George pulled that car right up outta there. The man said something to Dad about not having a tractor, and Dad replied: “A horse won’t spin, like a tractor would spin.” When he was telling me this story, Joe said that even though Dad had a tractor, he’d rather use a horse. He didn’t like the way the tractor could spin or slide…..he could count on a horse.

I am so thrilled to read these stories! What wonderful memories to have! I appreciate the multitude of ways horses are (and have been) valued and treasured!
