Core strength for riders

Why is core strength important? How do we develop it? Core strength is important in order for the rider to have good balance and the ability to stay centered in the saddle. It also enables to the rider to give more refined and effective aids. Targeted core strength training can help the rider develop a better ability to maintain better independence between the left side of the body and the ride side of the body, thus improving posture and position, and giving more independent aids.

As riders we generally know the importance of exercising our horses and developing their strengths. In order to be an asset to our horse when we're in the saddle, it's a good practice to pursue our own fitness and training. The Fėdėration Ėquestre Interationale (FEI) website has an excellent explanation of why core strength training is importance; it also includes their top five exercises for riders.

Ha Ha!! Though they such aren't "fun", I must admit I can begin to feel a difference when I'm able to stick with them for a while. I'll be interested to hear if you try any of these and if you find them helpful.
