Dressage Book Study. Step I Riding basics

Brigid Ripley

In Gymnasium of the Horse Gustav Steinbrecht outlines a very methodical explanation of riding and working with horses. In his Introduction, he talks about he rider’s seat and aids, and explains that productive work happens primarily with an appropriate, natural seat. This is essential if the rider is to correctly incorporate use of the limbs.

Throughout the book, Steinbrecht stresses the importance of understanding horses - their conformation, their personality and their anatomy. He also stresses the importance of taking time with each step of training. Furthermore, he explains that most resistance that horses offer is due to fear, tension or lack of understanding. He maintains that resistance will be the exception if the young horse is trained properly - given time to understand the rider, to gradually become accustomed to the aids, and is given plenty of time to practice the aids.
