Dressage Book Study.The Restraining Aids

In this section of the book, Steinbrecht again gives explains very clearly and in great detail, how to correctly use the restraining aids, which are limited to the action of the hands, and applied to the appropriate bit. He also explains that the rider's correct posture and placement of weight will reinforce but not replace the restraining aids. He goes on to say that the hands become guides when used with appropriate "action and co-action" of the seat and legs.

He describes the difference between light contact, soft contact, and firm contact and strongly cautions against ever yanking or pulling on the horse's mouth, as this can damage the soft tissue, and can also create training issues. “The skill of the hands can be considered a measure of the rider’s total skill.”
