Edna Interview Part 3 - Stories from Joe

My brother Joe had some stories about helping Dad with the horses. In the wintertime we burned wood for heat, and Dad and Joe were the ones who took care of that job. They would hook George up to a sled, and George would haul the wood back to the house. Joe recalled that they’d hook up the sled, tell old George to go and he’d take the sled to the wood pile. Dad and Joe could take a shortcut through the woods, and they'd just meet George at the woodpile.

One time they hooked the sled up and told old George to go, and he went halfway down the hill and stopped. They couldn’t figure out why he didn’t go all the way to the wood pile. So Dad took the reins and told George to go, and when he went forward it pulled the whole front end of the sled off. It turned out it had been hung up on a rock, and that’s why George stopped. Dad laughed and said "That old horse has more sense than we do!"
