Horses and Baking?

I have heard others share my sentiment that sometimes the best thing about baking is the aroma that fills the house, and lingers long after the treat has finished baking. Tied as we are to connections between the senses, a specific scent has a strong connection to memories. Particular aromas - especially that of baked goods like apple pie, an American icon, can trigger fond memories of childhood. That is sure the case with me! We had a few apple trees at my childhood home, which we referred to as the Apple Orchard, and before the first frost we would rush to collect all the apples into bushel baskets (I haven't seen one of those in many years!) The next week or so the kitchen was filled with the aroma of apple desserts cooking or baking - apple pie, apple crisp, apple sauce, apple cake. MMMMMM!!! Just writing about it puts a smile on my face!

Do you have any happy baking memories? Do you love to bake, but don't need any more calories? Try this simple recipe for horse treats. Your horses will love them! Or post a comment about baking, whether it is a horse-related comment or not!

Homemade Oatmeal Horse Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 large Carrot

  • 1 large Apple

  • 1 cup Molasses

  • 2 1/2 cups Old Fashioned Oats

  • 2 Tablespoons Oil

Directions:

  • Shred the carrot and the apple into a large bowl.

  • Add in the oil, oats, and molasses. Stir to combine well so that all the oats are covered in the molasses.

  • Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish. Pat the treats down with a spoon or with your fingers so they are flattened into the pan.

  • Bake at 400 degrees for about 40 minutes or until they begin to get crispy.

  • Remove the treats from the oven and let them cool for a while. The treats will harden slightly as they cool. Once they are hardened you can score into pieces.

I love the sound of those horse treats! I can't think of one of my horses who would turn them down!
