Not so Simple

Horses have been a big part of my life for over sixty years. After so many years, some of the tasks associated with caring for horses feel like they are just something I was born knowing...that all people would automatically know these things. Until you work with a novice, it's easy to forget that so much horse knowledge has to be broken down and taught intentionally and patiently- step by step. Considering all that goes into caring for horses, working with horses and understanding horses makes me appreciate the people in my life who introduced me to horses and shared their knowledge, and makes me aware of how important and sometimes difficult a simple task can be. And the people who continue to do so!

I won't attempt to inventory all the facets of horse care that I've contemplated, but I think it's worth mentioning a few that might be overlooked, beginning with learning to recognize the nonverbal communication used by horses. They can express so much without a single word! Putting on a halter, leading the horse, cleaning out the hooves, grooming, all are more challenging than one might think and can be very frustrating for novices. As I work with my six year old granddaughter, I realize that helping her to not only complete some of these tasks, but to do so with a quiet and fluid motion transfers as a very meaningful skill to all areas of life.

Great reminder! I love watching how horses communicate, with each other and with us! They are so expressive! And it is true that some of the skills we take for granted do need to be intentionally taught. This post is very thoughtful, and reminds me to be patient with my students in the classroom, as well! Thank you!

There are certainly many correlations between human students and equine students! I appreciate your thoughtful comments!
