Ponies are such hardy little creatues. Their little hooves have an exceptional ability to pick their way across all kinds of winter terrain - rough, frozen ground or icy patches on the trail. The winter coats they develop are exceptionally thick and long, giving them an edge when it comes to fending of the winter chill. They do, however, have difficulty navigating really deep snow.
In order to maintain good health, they need ample fresh clean water each day, good quality hay, and they definitely appreciate a shelted place to get out of the elements. It's all the more enjoyable when there's a good fresh supply of shavings. Ruger - pictured here, is a great testament to that. When he exits his loafing shed in the morning, there are few patches of his coat that are devoid of shavings. He wears them proudly! He is so adorable! Thank you for the tips on taking care of horses in the winter! It's difficult to imagine that it is, in fact winter, but the footing is getting challenging for them with the rain-freeze-rain cycles we've been having!
