Sustainable Horsekeeping Tips - Tip #1

Sustainability is a much-used term these days, but I think it is very much worth considering with regard to how we live our lives. When I first heard of a sustainable dressage facility, I was quite surprised. The terms "dressage" and "sustainable" almost seemed like an oxymoron at the time. Eventually I realized that it was my own restrictive thinking that made them seem so. I googled Wild Rose Farm to learn more about their sustainable practices. After visiting their site I was well aware that my budget would not support some of the energy efficient strategies and devices that I read about there, but it was helpful for me to see those features and practices being put in place. My plan is to introduce sustainable tips, one at a time, interspersed with other blog posts, and to request that others offer their own tips for sustainability.

  1. Energy Efficiency: Opt for energy-efficient lighting in barns and equestrian facilities, such as LED bulbs. Use timers or motion sensors to control lighting, ensuring they are only active when needed. Properly insulate buildings to reduce heating and cooling requirements. Replacing a roof? Opt for white - as it will not attract the heat in summer. Consider planting trees or shrubs in strategic locations to provide natural cooling with their shade.
