Unique Breeds - Gypsy Vanner

Brigid Ripley

I first learned of the Gypsy Vanner breed about ten years ago, and although I had a broad notion of what the breed is, when I sat down to write this post, I recognized just how much information I did NOT know. I sought out the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society website and was shocked to discover how ne the registry actually is. It was formed in 1996 in order to protect the vision that the Gypsy people had for the breed, which they developed with the goal of breeding the perfect caravan horse.

Gypsies are a small draft horse, ranging in size from 13 H 2" to 15 H, though some Gypsies fall outside that range. All colors are acceptable though they are most commonly black and white - sometimes called piebald. They are easily recognizable because of their generous feathering and long, thick manes and tails. They are known to be a very sturday horse, with a kind and gentle personality. They have expressive gaits - particularly the trot. Although bred to pull carts, they are successful in many disciplines, including jumping and dressage.
