What is western dressage? The basic training regimen and the tenets of western dressage align with those of classical dressage, but in western tack. Unlike the requirement for most western shows, a snaffle bit is allowed at all levels of western dressage. Western dressage is relatively new on the scene. It made its first appearance in 2010, and became officially recognized by the US Dressage Federation (USDF) and the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) in 2013, though not all classical dressage shows include classes in western dressage.
While terminology may vary - working trot in classical dressage is a jog in western dressage, the tests are very similar in structure. Compare USDF Introductory Level Test A and Western Dressage Association (WDA) Introductory Test Level I, and the movements are very similar. For a complete set of rules and guidelines, visit the WDA website: Western Dressage Association
